JIM RICHARDS, 21 Ht 6' Wt 170. Has been a swimmer for 5 years, and does considerable surfing, spear fishing and skin diving. Is also a champion runner doing 100 yards in 56 seconds, 50 yards in 25 seconds. May enter the '56 Olympics for 100 yd style. Is a life guard during summer months and during college engages in almost all sports. Hopes to be a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon). The Mormon church teaches us that all men are Gods in embryo, though it may require several lives to realize our ultimate estate. If we would prepare ourselves for oneness with the Creator, we must develop our minds, spirits and bodies according to divine pattern. This is not to say that we must have super bodies to achieve divine perfection, but rather that we must treat our bodies with the same respect and consideration we would accord to anything which is God's. Are our bodies truly ours to do with as we will, or do we have a divine obligation to leave in our genes which will influence the physical characteristics of future generations that which is beautiful and magnificent? Almost all religions teach us that we must not sin against the body. While some interpretations of what constitutes sin may differ radically, most will agree that those habits and behaviour patterns which cause visible deterioration of the body are detrimental. Who will claim physical benefits from smoking, intemperant drinking, overeating, depriving the body of sleep, disregard for hygiene etc.? Regretfully we must add that intemperant exercising may also be a sin against the body, and it is our sincere hope that no one will become so inspired by the examples of physical perfection presented in this and other books that he will attempt to force his body too rapidly which can result in heath breakdown. It is far more likely however that we will be overly-lazy than over-ambitious. The almost unbelievable success of vitamin and health pills is brought about by people often too lazy to eat natural well-balanced meals which may require a little hard chewing, and many of these are sorely disappointed when they fail to achieve the body pictured on the label of the bottle.
Religious students may be interested in studying excerpts from the Bible dealing with health. These include Exodus 15/26. Deut 7/15. Proverbs 4/20 thru 22. Acts 27/34 Jeremiah 35/5 thru 8. Daniel 1/10 thru 16. 3rd John 1/2. If you find others we would appreciate your sending us the references as we are preparing an article on "Health, Bodybuilding and Religion"
